Assessment of Occupational Exposure to BTEX in a Petrochemical Plant via Urinary Biomarkers

چکیده
This work presents the results of first Serbian monitoring campaign performed to assess occupational exposure petrochemical industry workers benzene (B), toluene (T), ethylbenzene (E), and xylene (X), known collectively as BTEX. The following urinary biomarkers were investigated: phenol, hippuric acid, o-Cresol, p-Cresol, creatinine. BTEX compounds collected in 2014 using Casella passive samplers. Multivariate statistical analysis was put evidence correlation between measured air concentration biomarkers. While indicate an elevated presence working environment studied that surpasses national European Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL), levels remaining (TEX) parameters below OEL. high relative standard deviations (RSD) for concentrations each compound (68–161 mg m?3) point toward intensive confirmed by relevant urine biomarkers, particularly mean values which ten fourteen times higher than ones found control group (14–12 g?1 creatinine). On average, are at a risk developing cancer (6.1 × 10?3), with exceeding US EPA limits. Benzene should therefore be maintained under tight controls monitored via proper

Semi-quantitative risk assessment of health exposure to hazardous chemical agents in a petrochemical plant
Background: Chemical contaminants present in the work environments include gases, vapors, and solid and liquid suspended particles. The number of factories producing chemicals has increased significantly. Each year, new products are introduced into the market. Consequently, the number of employees at risk of exposure to these materials is increased. Hazardous chemicals are used in the petrochem...
متن کاملHealth risk assessment of occupational exposure to harmful chemical agents in a pesticide manufacturing plant
Background: In most industries, employees are in contact with various chemical agents. The objective of this study was to assess the health risks posed by occupational exposure to harmful chemical agents in a pesticide manufacturing plant in Zahedan, Iran, in 2013. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in different units of a pesticide manufacturing plant. In order to...
متن کاملOccupational exposure of petroleum depot workers to BTEX compounds.
BACKGROUND Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) are the most important toxic volatile compounds in the air and could be easily absorbed through the respiratory tract. In recent years, the risk of exposure to BTEX compounds, especially benzene as a carcinogen, has been considered in petroleum depot stations. OBJECTIVE To assess the occupational exposure of petroleum depot workers i...
متن کاملOccupational Exposure to Styrene Vapor and Determining Risks of Health Consequences in Petrochemical Industry Workers
Introduction: Styrene (C₆H₅CH=CH₂) is known as one of the volatile organic substances produced or used in petrochemical industries. Exposure to this chemical compound can thus lead to respiratory diseases. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate occupational exposure to styrene vapor and to determine the risks of its health consequences in petrochemical industry workers through a quantitative m...
